What the fuck is this doing on a government website???

his is from www.americasupportsyou.mil. Notice the .mil ending. This is on the motherfucking Pentagon's website:

Operation Straight Up Tour is working to help military children and families become stronger through faith-based entertainment, its founder said.

“OSU Tour is an organization dedicated to helping our armed forces with the common issues brave men and women face,” Jonathan Spinks said, referring to child rearing, troubled marriages, anger, depression, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder. “We’re addressing those things through entertainment.”

http://www.americasupportsyou.mil/americasupportsyou/Content.aspx?ID=44755552&SectionID=1

Okay, alarm bells should be going off in your head right now. What exactly is "faith-based entertainment"? The remainder of the article blabbers about high wire acts and comedians, but if you go to the Operation Straight Up founder's website, you get a very different story, under the headline "Military Crusade in Iraq":

We are most excited about this crusade and yes we are willing to go to the front lines with a very encouraging word straight from God, to our troops. We feel the forces of heaven have encouraged us to perform multiple crusades that will sweep through this war torn region. We’ll hold the only religious crusade of its size in the dangerous land of Iraq.

http://jspinks.org/iraq.html

And what kind of "faith-based entertainment" are they sending to Iraq?

Actor Stephen Baldwin, the youngest member of the famous Baldwin brothers, is no longer playing Pauly Shore's sidekick in comedy masterpieces like Biodome. He has a much more serious calling these days.

Baldwin became a right-wing, born-again Christian after the 9/11 attacks, and now is the star of Operation Straight Up (OSU), an evangelical entertainment troupe that actively proselytizes among active-duty members of the US military. As an official arm of the Defense Department's America Supports You program, OSU plans to mail copies of the controversial apocalyptic video game, Left Behind: Eternal Forces to soldiers serving in Iraq. OSU is also scheduled to embark on a "Military Crusade in Iraq" in the near future.

...

The Left Behind videogame is a real-time strategy game that makes players commanders of a virtual evangelical army in a post-apocalyptic landscape that looks strikingly like New York City after 9/11. With tanks, helicopters and a fearsome arsenal of automatic weapons at their disposal, Left Behind players wage a violent war against United Nations-like peacekeepers who, according to LaHaye's interpretation of Revelation, represent the armies of the Antichrist. Each time a Left Behind player kills a UN soldier, their virtual character exclaims, "Praise the Lord!" To win the game, players must kill or convert all the non-believers left behind after the rapture. They also have the option of reversing roles and commanding the forces of the Antichrist.

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion?bid=15&pid=220960

Oh, and that's not all:

This controversy has not deterred OSU from encouraging US troops to play virtual rounds of kill or convert after a hard day of house-to-house searches and counterinsurgency warfare against Iraqi insurgents. What's more, OSU's "Freedom Packages" include a copy of evangelical pastor Jonathan McDowell's More Than A Carpenter -- a book advertised as "one of the most powerful evangelism tools worldwide" -- that is double-published in Arabic. Considering that only a handful of American troops speak Arabic, the book is ostensibly intended for proselytizing efforts among Iraqi civilians.

http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion?bid=15&pid=220960

All with the blessing of the fucking Pentagon.

Thank you, Supreme Court, for protecting Bush's "faith-based initiatives" so bullshit artists like Stephen Baldwin can go on a "crusade" in Iraq spreading "faith based entertainment" to our soldiers which encourages them to kill or convert the unfaithful, all of it funded by our tax dollars.

Fucking sickening.

I am in the military. At the starting of every official military ceremony the chaplain says a prayer to the christian god. As an atheist it is clear to me that the government is Christian end of story. It's blows my mind that every right wing pundit says there are no more christians everything is secular I don't see it. I see everyone around me calling themselves christian.

So how is a faith based video game like this one any different then any other "atheist" video game where you go around killing people. I think your argument is a little hypocritical. Most violent video games could be considered atheist because of the absence of religion in them but I don't see you complaining about them. You could therefore consider atheists violent because of the video games they create. Try looking at all the facts before coming to such a one sided opinion. This being on a government website is a separate story.

  • At 8/16/2007 9:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

The complaint here seems to be a "guilt by association".

I don't see the issue. They aren't endorsing the video games in the article, merely commenting that group put on faith based entertainment shows for the troops.

How is this government endorsement of these video games?

You're a fucking moron if you think that because a game does not mention god that it is an atheist game. That's like saying that every time there is no tooth fairy in a game, that it is pandering to the Atoothfairyists.
Did you finish grade school? Because you obviously don't know what the word atheist means.

I think so too. I was in the army and found myself standing around a lot watching people talk to themselves. I think that christianity is a far bigger threat to this country right now than radical Muslims. People will beleave whatever they will, but it is important to keep church and state apart.
The more we let them influence policy the less this can be called America. Wave your flag at that

The point is that "atheist" based video games aren't out to convert people. They are not their to encourage people to take up arms against other races. They are there for entertainment value no matter how violent. This perticularly game has a clear agenda: to encourage people to convert other religions through whatever means neccesary. This is what you want your tax dollars and military budgets to go towards? Changing peoples belief systems and forcing them to a line of thinking that encourages them to kill in the name of god? By making this a religious war Bush has managed to stir up enough emotion to keep it going indefinately. It doesn't bother you that some fanatical zealot wants this game to encourage multiple crusades? To forcably change innocent peoples beliefs through violence and bloodshed? Well I'm sorry I totally got the whole American idea of Freedom wrong. I thought it meant that people were allowed to choose their ideals and pbelief systems for themselves.

  • At 8/16/2007 9:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I, for one, agree with you.
I'm fed up with these right-winged religious zealots.

Is the very point of Christianity to love one's neighbor and do unto others what you would have done unto you?

In some video games you mindlessly kill people, but in this particular game you kill people because you actually believe that it is morally right; that God wants you too.

    And that is sickening.
Also, isn't there supposed to be a separation of church and state? I say if the government is going to endorse "Christian Entertainment," then they should also support the other religions as well, because I'm sure not every single person in the military is Christian.

-I'm liberal by the way. Hopefully after the next election American will begin to change for the better...

i think its the fact that this goes to show that this war is not a war for justice, but a war of religion. plain and simple. this game shows that some of the government is encouraging this to be a holy war. its all just christians trying to spread there faith..

  • At 8/16/2007 9:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

how is a game that only christians are probably going to play out to convert people. Because its religiously based in automatically has an agenda?

  • At 8/16/2007 9:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I understand your frustration. When someone (or a government) is endorsing an idea you are against, it can be upsetting. That said, there is nothing constitutionally against what you have reported. It is good that people care enough about our armed forces to serve them in this way. It is also very natural to people faced with death in the line of duty to ask spiritual questions. A dream of a faithless society is just irrational, especially in such circumstances. So, I'm sure (as you sound intelligent) you will support them. Hey, you could go to the front lines and help them answer these existential questions in your own way too!

  • At 8/16/2007 9:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

In my opinion, the government should stay neutral on the issue of religion -- separation of church and state protects everyone's right to believe what they like. The faith based entertainment project mentioned would be a violation of this, even though it could be argued that it's not a huge one.

Christianity, Islam, or for that matter atheism has no ability to hurt our nation so long as we keep religion out of government and take care to respect everyone's right to worship (or not) in their own way.

  • At 8/16/2007 9:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

you would have to consider atheism a religion to keep it out of the government. just a thought

Good point, anonymous at 9:29. The constitution does not mention a "separation of Church and state." In fact the first amendment says that the government cannot restrict the free exercise of religion. So, if those in uniform, or the President, or anyone wishes to teach their religion, it is perfectly fine. As long as they aren't forcing people to believe as they do, it is fine. People who are upset at these things are either ignorant of what our constitution says, or are upset that someone would believe something they don't.

But how is it not a "christian terrorist trainer"? Is this not the sort of game the media was saying the terrorists had their hands on? That they were using games to train their terrorist cells and movies to propogate anti-american/christian thinking? This is a game that encourages people to kill others who do not fit in with their obviously christian views. I don't want to think of God as I gun down my Neighbour. God is in chairty, God is in Nature, God is in you or I. He is not in the malicious act of killing another sinner. That is why Jesus died is it not? To repent for our sins? How arrogant can we be to say that we now have the right to do Gods work and kill those people that he, according to the bible, has forgiven ("for they know not what they do")?

It's not just a game. It uses current real life fears and prejudices to push an agena. Just a computer game is somehing like DOOM or QUAKE or SCARFACE games that are pure fantasy with no politcal comment or agenda, these games provide entertainment and fantasy. This game provides entertaiment but it also gives a prejudiced and fanatical viewpoint. Besides its not just the game that stinks, it's also the fact that a clearly political game is being pushed by a govenment body with a clearly aligned political agenda. Why isn't Frontline being pushed for training? Isn' that more realistic for training than a post-apocalyptic nightmare?

It doesn't have to be religiously based. It terrorists were using the medal of honor games would you have a problem with that? Just because it is religiously based does not make it a terrorist trainer. And like I said before, my comments have nothing to do with this being on a government website, that is a separate issue.

And in respinse to you people who think that we havent visited the website this is a direct quote from the makers of the game:

    Our Mission
The mission of Left Behind Games is to become the world's leading independent developer and publisher of quality interactive entertainment products that perpetuate positive values and appeal to mainstream and faith-based audiences, while remaining committed to increasing shareholder value.

It is management's belief that LEFT BEHIND will be a catalyst for a new genre of video game entertainment; known, as stated by the Wall Street Journal, as "God Games".

Yeah O.K. it's based on a book but man, look at the contents and the story of the game. Its pretty cut and dry. This is not just a game this is "faith-based" entertainment to encourage "values" since when did American Values include telling people what to think at gun point (and I did say cvalues not history)

Michale, stop showing such ignorance I'll help you out.. From IGN.com
To keep the balance of power in your favor, you'll have to find
non-violent ways to avoid getting killed. Your units will definitely fight back in a life or death situation but, for the most part, you want to either avoid your enemies or have a ready plan to convert.

Fighting for and keeping recruits requires some thoughtful and persistent strategies and the fact that you have to do it without shooting or stabbing your enemies adds even more depth.

So this whole Convert or DIE argument.. sorry its not in the game..

"The constitution does not mention a "separation of Church and state." In fact the first amendment says that the government cannot restrict the free exercise of religion."

--You conveniently left off the part that says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." Federal courts have repeatedly ruled that when the government spends money on one religion, it constitutes a de facto establishment of religion. So, if the government is paying for this, it violates the First Amendment.

"People who are upset at these things are either ignorant of what our constitution says, or are upset that someone would believe something they don't."

--You are the one who is ignorant of the Constitution and the common law interpretation of it.

I am a christian, and i find the premises of these games to me completely ridiculous, as christians we are taught to love, to care, and most of all not to kill, how is this game in which the ultimate goal is to kill as many non-christians as possible furthering the christian message. The only thing these games achieve is to make people further despise christians. Also, the government should not be supporting these games and trying to persuade soldiers to play them, have we forgotten the separation of church and state granted in the constitution?

I have no problem with violent video games. I play them. Regularly. I am saying that to have a game with a considered message in it's story and gameplay is akin to subliminal messages through television programs. I am saying that the games allegedly played by terrorists were off the shelf normal games and that caused an uproar. Yet we release a game specifically designed to encourage the player to kill non-christians and give them the tools to do it with and nothing is said. I actually don't have that much of a problem with the game. I wont be buying it. I don't like the concept and don't have any inclination to play it but I will not stop you buying it or try to lobby against the company or this "new-genre". i do however take massive exception to the abuse of power by the govenrnment in openly pushing a game such as this in direct juxtaposition to their stance on off the shelf consumer games allegedly played by terrorists in training.

It is the irony of ironies when the country founded for religious freedom and fair taxation is the number one representative of the exact opposites of those two things. And by ironic, I don't misuse it like Alanis Morrisette's "Isn't it Ironic." She should understand the concept before penning an entire song about it (had to get that out---it's been sitting in my head for years).

We have become the very things that we rebelled against in the 1700s, yet there is so much apathy that "faith based" ANYTHING in government is not met with protests and riots in the streets. Change starts with one voice screaming for justice.

    Separation of church and state:
Keep religion OUT of politics. That means ALL religion, for you anonymous posters who think we're Christian bashing. If it were a Buddhist game, I'd be saying the same thing and undoubtedly have to clarify for some fanatical Buddhists (contradiction in terms, it’s just an example). The fact that the government is in any way affiliated with a religion goes against that basic principle.

Now, I COMPLETELY understand the point of view about violent video games. However, as a player of such games, I can't really say I sympathize. If you have a healthy understanding of the way the world works, it doesn't matter what game you play; you're not going to go around killing people. And, I'm sorry to say, violent video games are the same as guns. They are harmless by themselves, but become an incredible vessel for pain and suffering if misused by an individual. Unfortunately, they differ because, in America, if you try to say "guns bad" you’re likely to get shot.
And for the record, the game terrorists used to train for flying an aircraft into a "building full of innocents" was completely misguided and misleading. The game was a flight simulator, the most BORING kind of game in the world. No one expected terrorists to use it in the way that they did. So please, don't try blaming people for something they had NO control over. It would be like blaming the car manufacturer for allowing their cars to be driven by drunken people.

That’s all I really wanted to point out. And in conclusion, I'd like to reference our first amendment, and commend everyone for exercising it. Funny thing, our constitution is. ;)

This is trying to make a problem where no problem exists. This is divisive and simply to create sides. The game sucks, but that doesn't mean I have to hate it or think it's wrong.

Somebody wrote that there were all of these shoot em' game where you are killing everybody, and he labeled them atheist games because there was lack of religion. Listen up....... have you ever read the old testament. Make a video game of that and talk about some violence......what about being without a faith is violent. An atheist lifestyle is one of reason. One that need a crutch of religion to sleep at night.....One that is content with there surrounding natural world and can accept the fact that when he/she dies, nothing supernatural happens. One that take reasonability for there action of the here and now. fuck the video game and fuck faith based religions. Look at history and see how violent Islam and christian have been. Im so over christians
